3b Beaches

Seal Beach is located at the Northern most border of Orange County California and during the 1920's was known as the "pleasure place". This beach was named for the seals that once occupied the beach but have gone away and never returned. Seal Beach featured a roller coaster, gambling ships, rum runners and wicker boardwalk carts and boasted the 2nd longest pier in the United States. There was even a bathing pavilion with 1000 dressing rooms with doors that opened to the beach. I'm sure this beach must have been the "place to be" back in the 1920's. Today Seal Beach is known for it's beachfront shopping with something for everyone.

Bodega Bay Beaches are located in Sonoma County in Northern California. The harbor was used to ship out lumber and is now become a fishing harbor. Many come to fish and crab from the shore and some fishing piers. These beaches have become a vacation mecca with the beautiful sunsets and home available for rental right on the beach. Bodega Bay is still very quaint as opposed to Seal beach. There is not much shopping but does attract tourists to visit the site where Alfred Hitchcock filmed the 1963 thriller "The Birds".

3a World Cities

Los Angeles spans 469 square miles and is located in Southern California. Los Angeles County is one of the most densily populated counties in the United States. This city is world renound for Hollywood, the meca of movies stars and is best known for fame, fortune, glitz and glamour. Ususally if any young person has a dream of entering show business, they travel to Los Angeles for the "city of dreams", Hollywood. Los Angeles better known as L.A. is home to 12.9 million people who have converged from all over the world, thus allowing Los Angeles to boast that 224 foreign languages are spoken here.
In contrast San Francisco is only 231 square miles with a population of only 764,971 people.
San Francisco is known for being the gateway to the Pacific, with that title comes the largest Chinatown in the United Sates. San Francisco's populations is reffered to a "cosomopolitan" in a large part this is due to it's diversity both with cultures and ways of life. This city has micro cultures such as the Lesbian, Gay and Transgender community and then there is the famous "Haight St." which hosts "hippi throwbacks" and the new style "goth" or "emo" lifestyles.
Both cities have so much to offer as far as tourism or even just to call either of them "home".

2c California Wines

The "Father Of Wine" Junipero Serra, planted the first vineyard in California in 1769 at Mission San Diego de Alcala. The varietal he planted was from Mexico and was known as the grape. Since that time the wine industry has boomed throughout California. Of course the most popular area for California wine production is Napa Valley with Sonoma running in 2nd.
The climate in Napa makes it a prime location for growing grapes. The hot, sunny days and cool damp nights make the skin of the grape pungent and moist which increases the sugar int the fruit and in turn make a perfect wine grape. Northern California is well known for it's Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Pinot Noire produced from the red grape, also the Chardonnay and Sauvigon Blanc produced from the green grape.
During the period of Prohibition, 1919 through 1933 the wine industry was forced to produce the "blood of the Gods" in basements of homes due to a loop hole in the law that allowed a family to produce 200 gallons on "non-intoxicating fruit juice" in their homes. This turned entire families to into bottling workers.
Thankfully today we are all entitled to drink wine freely. If you haven't enjoyed visiting some of our local wineries, you are missing out. Take a day to tour a winery and watch the process of wine making, it is an art. Cheers!

2b Museum of Modern Art

The San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA) was founded by Dr.Grace Morely and opened it's doors in 1935 on the top floors of the War Memorial building. In 1975 the word "Modern" was added to it's title and moved to it's current location in Yerba Buena Gardens in 1996. The collections consist of Animals, Technology, Landscape, Abstraction and currently artist Frida Kahalo from Mexico will be showing until September. The museum hosts 20 exhibitions and over 300 educational programs. A 14,000 square foot roof top garden is being added and should open Spring 2009 to the public, this will act as "gallery without a ceiling".
The architectural design was done by Mario Botta and is similar looking to "MOMA" in New York, this is why it is nicknamed "SFMOMA".

2a San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the leading tourist destinations. 16 million tourist visited the city in 2007 making San Francisco one of the Top Ten Tourist Destinations. Being born and raised in San Francisco, I think I am a little partial by saying "San Francisco is one of the Best Cities In The World". This city has such an ethnic diversity and has it's own California Culture. Just because San Francisco is in California does not mean it has any similarity to Los Angeles. As far as I am concerned, San Francisco is a one of a kind with all of the ethnic neighborhoods and their food, music and shops you feel as though you are not in the United States although San Francisco is only 230 square miles. The best part of San Francisco is the people, the lifestyles of everyone differs so much but it doesn't really matter because there is definitely a San Franciscan cohesiveness that is blind to race, religion, wealth and sexual orientation, this all may sound too good to be true but it really exists.
